Be A Light

Mentality - the characteristic attitude of mind or way of thinking of a person or group.

I find the way people think very interesting. Honestly, part of me thinks I would have really enjoyed becoming a psychologist or psychiatrist because I find how people think so interesting. I could spend a lot of time analyzing people’s actions/reactions to things, trying to figure out the why.

Everyone has a different mindset based on their experiences in life. While humans are definitely creatures of habit, we also have the God-given ability to constantly learn. Some of us are only taking in small things naturally, while others have a thirst for learning and growing. This is evident when you look at the life cycle of a person…when someone is young vs. when they are old. The older version always seems to have at least a bit more knowledge and wisdom.

Your mentality affects how you see yourself. It affects your self-esteem and how you interact with others. It can define you. It can change you. It can make you grow or make you weak.

Even though it can be hard to overcome a weak mentality, it’s possible. I used to be weak. It wasn’t that I was a weak person or sheep that just followed, but I didn't stand up for what I believed in. I didn’t take the reins or drive. I just floated along. Then I started thinking. Yep…took me a while to do that.

I don’t know when, but all of sudden I just started feeling this uneasy feeling inside my soul. It was uncomfortable. It was frustrating. It was like a constant tick of a clock, and I couldn’t get rid of it. I knew I needed to be something else, do something else, live a different way…I just didn’t feel like I was doing what I was supposed to be doing.

I feel like I’m supposed to be helping people, leading people or doing something greater. I feel like I’m supposed to be a light for others. I’m not the hero that’s holding the light, just the light. I’m not looking for fame or even respect, just wanting to help lead people out of the darkness. I think when I started to read the Bible daily is when it all came together for me. It really is a self-help book. In all honesty, I’m still trying to figure this all out, so this is on-going.

I also don’t think this feeling is just mine. I think we all want to be something more. We all want to be lights for someone in our lives. If we lose the mentality of being a sheep that follows the light, we can be the light for the sheep and maybe make more lights. Take that mentality of the light. Be someone that is showing people the way, not just following the herd.

We need more lights in the world. More open-minded thinkers. More rebels pushing back against group-think. We need more people with the mindset of “I’m not a sheep and will think for myself.”

Take a look at your mentality. What are you? Are you a sheep or will you be a light and help others?
