Anchoring Your Hope

 The Anchor For Hope

Hope is one of the most powerful words in language. The idea of hope can inspire people to reach their potential or it can help people just get through whatever trials and trouble they are in.

It can be as motivating as ACDC’s Thunderstruck before a football game.

It can be comforting as your cozy couch during a Nebraska winter.

Hope can be a lot of things and have a lot of power.

But I often wonder what anchors hope for many people. For many years hope has been anchored in faith. Spirituality and religion have been in my life since day one thanks to my parents, so to me, the anchor for hope is my faith. It’s still where my steadfast hope comes from and why I don’t devastatingly worry about the future.

If you look at the world today though, it seems like God and faith are not the center  of our focus, so how does that change hope. What are people anchoring their hope to these days?  Is it in people? Is it in the government? Is it in science and nature?

My hope for this life is that God has a purpose for me and is sharpening my skills and crafts to do something amazing. My hope lies in doing the best I can to follow my faith and live to be a good person, that I will be taken care of. It doesn’t mean it’s going to be easy…might be really hard and discouraging, but I know I will get through.

I can’t place my hope in other people because no one is perfect. Sure, I can trust others, but putting full faith in someone…humans are flawed, will always be flawed. I definitely would never put my hope in the government because it’s usually people (remember flawed) drunk with power and self-serving. Science…we place way too much hope in science. Yes we can figure out how things work and do some crazy cool stuff, but much of science is guesses that have been accepted as the way. Many are proven time and time again, but lots of guesses accepted as facts. Once again…yes proven truths, but lots of “we think” on the bigger ideas.

Anchoring your hope in faith isn’t science…you can read about all sorts of miracles and stories, but I get it, it’s not always set in stone. For me having faith, blindly believing in something bigger is what gives me hope and it doesn’t let me down. I don’t always get what I hope for, but God has a funny way of getting things done to get me where I’m supposed to be.

My hope is anchored in faith and it’s something I know will keep me going. I know I will be ok and I know I can get through whatever comes my way. What’s your hope anchored in?
