Be Generous
Generosity is a beautiful characteristic of a person.
Being able to help others without expecting anything (even praise) is something that is truly a blessing.
Generosity is also a very hard thing to do. I feel my wife and I are generous. God has blessed us with a lot, and we try to give back even when we know we could use that money for something else. For us, it’s important as #1 Christians, and #2 parents.
We want Abigail to understand that being generous with all that she has been given is a beautiful thing to do and that it will come back to her someday. This scripture I used today is something I believe to be true. I believe God will be generous with us if we are generous to others. I believe that when we give with no intention of getting it back, no expectation of praise or publicity, God will reward us.
As good as that sounds, I also think we shouldn’t do it for God’s rewards. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll take them, but when you can be generous, especially on the down-low, there is something fulfilling about it. It invigorates your soul and brightens your spirit. You feel a happiness that is hard to describe.
I wasn’t always generous. I used to hoard. I’ve never had an excess of money. My time was precious. I wanted to keep stuff even if I wasn’t using it. I look back and I wasn’t as happy as I am now. I went through life worried about money and having stuff. It was my own addiction.
I still have a hard time controlling the want for things, but it’s gotten better. God blessed me with a wife who is good at keeping my spending in check. He’s helped me feel that spark in my soul when I can help others and He’s placed conviction on my heart when I think of others needing things when I just want another something.
I think we all should learn to be generous. We should all learn to give without expecting payment and payback. We should do acts of goodness without capturing the video on YouTube to get likes. Think generously with your money, your time, your talents and your love. Give happily and see what rewards come your way.
